The airport company Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH (FBB) operates Berlin Brandenburg Willy Brandt Airport (BER) with its three terminals. Berlin is the third biggest airport location in Germany and ranks first in terms of origin and destination traffic (not counting connecting passengers). In 2019, before the coronavirus pandemic, the airports in Schönefeld and Tegel handled around 35.65 million passengers. For 2020, the airport company expects a total of around nine million passengers.
Important Update: 27 October 2013 Announced as New Opening Date for BER The supervisory board of the airport management company set the new opening date for Berlin Brandenburg Airport Willy Brandt for 27 October 2013. This decision came after the opening date for the new airport for the capital city region had to be postponed when it became clear that completion and subsequent inspection and approval of the safety systems could no longer be achieved by the originally projected opening date of 3 June 2012. The following updates published here therefore apply: • The new Berlin Brandenburg Airport Willy Brandt will open on 27 October 2013. • The closure of airports Tegel and Schoenefeld (old) will coincide with the opening of the new airport. • Managing Director for Operations and Construction Dr. Manfred A. Körtgen has left the company as of 1 June 2012. • Presenting the board of management of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH: – Prof. Dr. Rainer Schwarz, Chief Executive Officer – Dipl.-Ing. Horst Amann, Chief Operating Officer • The contract with the consortium responsible for planning and supervision of the project, Planungsgemeinschaft Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg International (pg bbi), was terminated with immediate effect on 23 May 2012.
