Für das Jahr 2020 rechnet die Flughafengesellschaft mit insgesamt rund neun Millionen Passagieren.

The airport company Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH (FBB) operates Berlin Brandenburg Willy Brandt Airport (BER) with its three terminals. Berlin is the third biggest airport location in Germany and ranks first in terms of origin and destination traffic (not counting connecting passengers). In 2019, before the coronavirus pandemic, the airports in Schönefeld and Tegel handled around 35.65 million passengers. For 2020, the airport company expects a total of around nine million passengers.

Cargo Undoubtedly the fastest: Global transportation of goods In a globalised world, the rapid transportation of goods is becoming increasingly important. No wadays, eating fresh fruit from the other side of the world is as much a part of everyday life as reading a local daily newspaper while on holiday. Highly sensitive goods, high-tech and biotech goods, as well as relief aid in the event of a disaster, are all transported by aircraft. Air freight trend in 2009 In 2009, 29,302 tons of air freight were handled at Berlin Airports (-11.9 %), of which 20,346 tons were transported by aircraft (not including trucking); down nine per cent on the previous year. Global air freight experienced a similarly sharp decline due to the financial crisis. Signs of a market recovery were visible, however, towards the end of the year with air freight loaded increasing by 20 per cent in December. The volume of air mail handled fell by 41.1 per cent to 5,630 tons. Deutsche Post World Net AG suspended all domestic night mail flights between late June and late November 2009. The Berlin– Stuttgart route was resumed in late November 2009, as delivery times could not be met using road services. Cargo Centre in Schoenefeld specialises in cargo With a 24-hour service and a Cargo Centre that has a modular design for complete flexibility, Schoenefeld offers ideal conditions for air freight customers. Deutsche Post World Net AG flies night mail from Schoenefeld to Stuttgart and UPS and Federal Express fly express freight to their European distribution centres in Cologne and Paris. The German Red Cross set up a Crisis Response Centre at Schoenefeld Airport, enabling it to provide rapid assistance anywhere in the world in emergency situations (e. g. following the earthquake in Haiti in January 2010), while Chapman Freeborn Airmarketing, which is also based in Schoenefeld, organised aid transports to Dushanbe (Tajikistan) for the German charity Friedensdorf. Growth market belly freight on long-haul routes Belly freight increased by around a third on long-haul flights in Berlin, despite the difficult financial environment. The leader in terms of volume is Hainan Airlines’ non-stop flight to Beijing, which accounted for almost half of long-haul belly freight. This was followed by Delta Air Lines and Continental Airlines services to New York, with the latter operating a larger Boeing B 767 on this service for the winter flight schedule. Air Berlin also managed to increase its belly freight on long-haul flights (Bangkok, Phuket, Varadero) by one per cent. BBI equipped for the future A cargo centre for belly freight is being built on the midfield right next to the BBI Terminal. The new facility, which is specially designed to handle belly freight for long-haul carriers, will be completed in time for BBI opening. BBI is well equipped for the future. According to the planning stipulation decision, there is sufficient room for expansion to accommodate further freight. 25

Exclusive collections are being sold in the shops and high-quality gifts or souvenirs can be bought at attractive prices in the Duty Free shops. Is this how you envisage BBI? The BBI marketplace is a meeting place for all of our passengers, holidaymakers and business travellers. Following check-in and the security checkpoints, around 150 sales units spanning an area twice the size of that of Schoenefeld and Tegel put together cater to all their shopping, 26 gastronomy and service needs. The BBI marketplace is impressive, even by international standards. The unique marketing opportunities offered by Brandenburg and Berlin will define the new airport in terms of gastronomy and retail. A combination of regional, national and international concepts and brands represent a new international airport that is rooted to its origins. Non Aviation revenue is becoming increasingly important for airports. What kind of concept do you have in mind for BBI? The new Capital Airport offers the unique opportunity to completely redesign all aspects of Non Aviation – from the concept through planning and rental to operations. In order to ensure that our ideas were fully incorporated in the build ing plans, we drafted the concept for the Non Aviation segment early on. The guiding principle for all drafts was to see things from a passenger’s perspective. The wide variety of businesses offered is designed to cater to the needs and desires of travellers. Concepts, brands and tenants are specifically chosen so that BBI has something to offer everyone. Berlin’s Non Aviation segment is now in concert with major German airports. BBI
