therefore was to support

therefore was to support airlines that already fly from Berlin. In this we were very successful and thus managed to help Berlin fare better than the market average for the seventh year in a row. Air Berlin in Tegel and Ryanair in Schoenefeld in particular were able to acquire new passengers. At the same time, we were able to celebrate the inauguration of several flights, mainly to destinations in Europe. By December 2009, we had once again recorded moderate growth. Which new destinations can we look forward to at BBI? On the one hand, we aim to close the current gap on the map of Europe and tap into small niche markets. On the other hand, we are working on increasing frequencies on existing routes. Both are a prerequisite for our third aim: to generate transfer traffic. The existing airports, Schoenefeld and Tegel, are neither designed for this nor are they able to accommo- date the huge number of passengers and routes. The conditions for generating considerable transfer traffic will only be created when BBI opens. On the one hand, more passengers will use Berlin as a transfer airport on European routes. On the other hand, transfer traffic is a prerequisite for establishing other long-haul routes, which are not financially viable with only passengers from the catchment area. There is huge potential for new connections, especially towards the East. How do you intend convincing the airlines to come to Berlin? The advantages of BBI are clear. Unlike other European airports, we have sufficient capacities for the next decade. Berlin is one of the top destinations in Europe. We are the gateway to the East. And we are the capital. Pooling passengers and creating transfer traffic will make Berlin a very attractive airline destination. And have the airlines reacted in an equally positive way? Yes, the airlines are very interested in the new Capital Airport, especially in operational processes and how well-connected the airport is to the city of Berlin. Many of the airlines not currently stopping at Berlin are taking note of how capacities are being created on a large scale right at the heart of Europe. The desire to play a part, and the fear of missing out, is great. We are even holding indepth talks with existing customers. A good example of this is Air Berlin, which plans to step up operations in Tegel considerably this year and thus explore the potential of BBI. Unfortunately, it must be said that the financial crisis has set the industry back about two years and has resulted in poorer results for many airlines in Europe, Asia and North America. Everyone is being cautious and still looking for solutions to the recession. Berlin was able to break away from this trend to some extent. For the past seven years we have fared better than the market average but still have some catching up to do. Berlin is becoming increasingly attractive in terms of tourism, business and politics. BBI offers Berlin the capacities to rank amongst the top players in the aviation league. 19
