involved and people in the region. The completed structural work will provide a good idea of the work that has been carried out since the groundbreaking ceremony in September 2006 and of the bright and friendly welcome the future Capital Airport will extend to its passengers. BBI: modern, flexible, cost-effective and modular The new BBI Airport will open on 30 October 2011. An airport optimally designed to meet air traffic requirements in the age of globalisation, stricter security requirements and the new business models of low- cost airlines. BBI brings all traffic together under one roof, is modern, flexible and cost-effective. Unlike other airports of its size, it has the potential to grow. A central security checkpoint alleviates the problem of long queues at peak hours. The expansion of the non aviation area after check-in as well as a first-class real estate portfolio enables new sources of revenue to be tapped. Another major advantage of the airport concept is that it optimally links all types of traffic. A rail link to Berlin and the surrounding area, an underground railway station directly below the terminal and its own motorway and A-road connections make the airport easily accessible not only by air. BBI marks the opening of one of the most state-ofthe-art airports in Europe. Manfred Körtgen Managing Director of Operations/ BBI at Berlin Airports 9

BBI Construction work on schedule Terminal Structural work has been completed on the 715-metre-long main pier. In late August 2009, work commenced on the steel construction for the terminal roof and on the steel and glass facade, structural work has already been completed on the north pier and work on the south pier is progressing nicely. Up to 900 construction workers and over 30 tower cranes were employed on the terminal building site. The total weight of the steel components required for the ter- 10 minal roof is around 10,000 tons, with the heaviest single component weighing 123 tons. The two caterpillar cranes, which are on the west side of the terminal lifting the steel components, are so big that 60 trucks were needed to assemble just one caterpillar crane. Railway station In July 2009, on schedule, Berlin Airports handed over the first preliminary construction section of the underground BBI rail link to Deutsche Bahn, who will expand the future BBI railway station, building the three platforms, laying the tracks and installing the railway technology. Aircraft operation areas Concrete work on the new 4,000metre-long south runway, aprons and taxiway systems is in full swing. Over 1.3 million square metres of concrete indicate where aircraft will eventually take off, land and park.
